Chinese Folk Papercuts

Dating back to 1600-1100 B.C., Chinese people have carved leather, silk and silver or gold foil for decorations.  The invention of paper during Han dynasty (206 B.C.-221 A.D.) transferred this practice to paper, and made carving a popular folk art. Paper- cuttings were used as ornaments in gates, windows, walls, columns, mirrors, lamps and lanterns for everyday life,  festivals and celebrations.

Paper cuttings are handcarfted by using either scissors or engraving knives, depending on the preference of artists.  They are absolutely delicate, vivid and exquisite!
