Zhaojun Wang--- a Han Princess

China had been battling with one of their neighbor, Xiongnu tribe of Central Asia for many years. The Xiongnu tribe was very poor, but they had fierce fighters, even the First Emperor's Great Wall couldn't stop their invasions. In China, thousands of houses were burnt into ashes and millions of people were killed.

During Han Dynasty, the tension between China and Xiongnu decreased. Rulers from both sides tried to seek a way to make peace.

One day, a massager from Xiongnu tribe came to Chang'an, the capital of Han Dynasty, with a message, which amazed the whole Palace. The prince of Xiongnu wanted to marry a Han royal girl! It was a signal that Xiongnu would make up with China and finally there could be peace throughout the empire. But whom would the Emperor send to Xiongnu for the marriage. All the royal girls were reluctant to leave the country and go to the far-away-from-home and poor tribe. The Emperor was worried.

In order to make peace with Xiongnu, the Emperor announced to the whole country, " Any girl who wants to marry to the Xiongnu Prince would be titled the Emperor's princess".

Three years earlier, a girl named Zhaojun Wang had been selected and sent to the Palace as one of the three thousand wives of the Emperor, whom she never had a chance to meet. In spite of her comfortable life in the Palace, she was willing to go to Xiongnu, and marry the Prince in the hope that it would bring peace to China. She sent the Emperor a note expressing her willingness to marry the Xiongnu Prince.

Days later, the emperor asked to see the girl that was willing to make such a sacrifice. When the emperor Saw her, he was so impressed by her beauty and elegance that he had doubts about sending her to Xiongnu. Zhaojun insisted that she needed to go for the sake of China.

The emperor was touched by this beautiful young lady's words. The emperor put a beautiful crown on Zhaojun's head, and declared her the Emperor's Princess.

A month later, the Xiongnu Prince came to Chang'an to meet his bride. He was impressed that the emperor was willing to give up such a beautiful girl.

After the wedding, the couple went to Xiongnu tribe where they lived happily. The peace between Xiongnu and China that they generated lasted the rest of their lives, and many years beyond.

Zhaojun is known as one of the four famous beauties (Xi Shi, Zhaojun Wang, Diaochan and Guifei Yang) in ancient China.
