Welcome to our Culture Village

In our village, all different celebrations and cultural events occur throughout the year.  It's time to celebrate GIRLS' DAY.  We hope you will enjoy a glimpse of this exotic scene.

The 7th day of the 7th lunar month (August 7, 2008) in Chinese  calendar is a special day for girls. At the night of this day, girls will sit under the moon, hoping to meet a beautiful fairy in the heaven, named Weaving Princess. They will ask her to share her skills in weaving, sewing and embroidery. These skills are traditionally considered essential for the girls' married life.   Girls have a craft-making contest on this day.  The winner will be a lucky girl, she will find a perfect match and have a happy life.  This tradition comes from a very old and stunning romantic legend.

Once upon a time, in a Heavenly Palace, there lived a very beautiful fairy.  She wove the most beautiful clothes in the world, so everybody called her the Weaving Princess.  She was the seventh daughter of the Heavenly Emperor and Empress.  The Weaving Princess grew up with a secret deeply buried in her heart.  She longed for a human life on the earth.

One day, she sneaked out of the Palace and flew all the way to the earth, which was strictly forbidden by the Heavenly Emperor.  She met a poor farmer, Niu Lang, on the earth and they fell into deep love with each other.  A year later, they gave birth to lovely twins, a boy and a girl.  They lived a happy life together.

The Heavenly Emperor and Empress finally discovered the Weaving Princess living on the earth.  This infuriated them.  They ordered their soldiers to take the Weaving Princess back to the Heaven.  Niu Lang was so saddened.   With the help of a heavenly god, Niu Lang and their two children flew up to the Heaven to meet the Weaving Princess.  When they were close to the Palace, the Empress blocked their way.  She pulled a hairpin from her hair and quickly swirled it in the air.  Suddenly, a huge river with roaring waves appeared in front of Niu Lang and the children.  This river is what we call Milky Way.  The Weaving Princess, Niu lang and their children cried on opposite sides of the river, tears streaming down into the river.

Their true love touched the creatures of the Heaven.   Thousands of magpies flew from all directions over the Milky Way.  They formed a splendid bridge for the Weaving Princess and her family to cross the river.  This display really moved the Heavenly Emperor and Empress.  They allowed the family to meet and have a reunion once a year through eternity.

Every year, on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, if you look up at the sky, you will see four bright stars along the Milky Way, two big ones, the Weaving Princess and her husband, and two small ones, the couple's twin children.

Chinese girls believe that this day when the Weaving Princess shows up in the sky, she will bring them good luck.  Couples in love also pray for a happy marriage on this day.  So, this day is called Chinese Valentine's Day as well.
