have time to visit today. Some of the
highlights are:
The Great Wall
The 13 Mausoleums : Located 40 kilometer
northwest of Beijing
. They are tombs of 13 emperors of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). Each mausoleum is a splendid underground
palace.
Tiananmen Square lies at the heart of
Beijing, and is the largest city square. It's the primary location for official parade and
celebrations. It is also used for
wandering and flying kites.
Surrounding the square are monuments past and present: Tiananmen (Gate of Heavenly Peace);
the Chinese Revolution History Museum; the Great Hall of the People; Qianmen (Front Gate);
the Mao Memorial and the Monument to the People's Heroes.
The Forbidden City was built in 1406-1420
and is the biggest and best-preserved cluster of ancient buildings in China. It has over
800 buildings and
9000 rooms ( quite a huge mansion!). It was
the residence of the emperors and their families of the Ming and Qing dynasty.
The Summer Palace was built in 1750, but
was burnt down in 1860 by
Anglo-French Allied Forces. Empress Dowager Ci
Xi (1835-1908) rebuilt it in 1888. The Summer Palace was for vacationing emperors and
Empress Dowager Ci Xi. It is known for its gardens which are preserved to this day.
Kunming Lake takes up three-quarters of the Palace. The main building is the Hall of
Happiness & Longevity, while along the north shore is the 2300ft Long Corridor, filled
with mythical paintings and scenes.
Tian Tem
ple was where the emperors of Ming
(1368-1644) and Qing dynasty (1644-1912) worshipped the heavenly gods and prayed for good
harvests. Tian means heaven in Chinese. The Echo Wall outside the temple will
astound you. There you can whisper at one end and your friends can hear you clearly at the
other end about two hundred yards away.
